Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment have announced the UK DVD and Blu-ray Disc release of Up on 15th February 2010. Pixar’s latest follows the uplifting tale of 78-year-old balloon salesman Carl Fredricksen, who finally fulfills his lifelong dream of a great adventure when he ties thousands of balloons to his house and flies away to the wilds of South America. But he discovers all too late that his biggest nightmare has stowed away on the trip: an overly optimistic 8-year-old Wilderness Explorer named Russell.

Available on 4-Disc Blu-ray Combo Superset (2xBD, 1xDVD, 1xDigital Copy), 2-Disc Blu-ray Combi (1xBD, 1xDVD) and 1-Disc DVD, features are outlined below…

DVD/Blu-ray Extras:
  • Commentary by director Pete Docter and co-director Bob Peterson.
  • Dug’s Special Mission – An all new original short film that follows the misadventures of Dug as he attempts to complete his “special mission.” The short is directed by UP Story SUPervisor, Ronnie Del Carmen.
  • The Many Endings of Muntz – Many ideas were hatched about how to dispose of the film’s arch villain, Muntz, and now viewers can see the many alternate endings proposed during story development.
  • Partly Cloudy –The hilarious short film that preceded screenings of UP. Everyone knows that the stork delivers babies, but where do the storks get the babies? The answer lies UP in the stratosphere where a cloud named Gus is a master at creating “dangerous” babies, which prove to be more than a handful for his loyal delivery stork Peck. Directed by Pixar story artist, animator and voice actor Peter Sohn.
  • Adventure is Out There – This action-packed documentary tells the story of the filmmakers’ own trek to the Tepui Mountains of South America to research the design and story of the film.

2-Disc Blu-ray Combi Additional Extra:
  • Cine-Explore – A visual montage of concept art, clips and documentary coverage that illustrates the directors’ commentary.

4-Disc Blu-ray Combo Additional Extras:
  • Geriatric Hero – A character study of Carl, from research to realization including art and design, rigging, animation and story. It focuses on the issues of aging, “simplexity”, shape-language and compelling character arcs.
  • Canine Companions – For anyone who ever wondered where CG pUPpies come from, an introduction to the design, behaviour and language of dogs.
  • Russell: Wilderness Explorer – A character study of Russell from inspiration and design to finding the character arc and authentic voice for this Wilderness Explorer.
  • Our Giant Flightless Friend, Kevin – Find out how avian research and development at Pixar helped bring a mythical, 13-foot tall iridescent bird to life.
  • Homemakers of Pixar – Carl and Ellie’s house is an important “character” in the film. Fans follow the development of the house from story to art to its ultimate realization in the computer.
  • Balloons and Flight – Carl’s house and Muntz's dirigible presented the filmmakers with two different problems—how could they make a physical impossibility possible? And, in the case of the dirigible, how would they unearth a fallen giant and let it soar?
  • Composing for Characters – Composer Michael Giacchino returns to score his third Disney Pixar feature film. See how the UP filmmakers collaborated with Giacchino to create the memorable score and compelling musical themes.
  • Married Life – The original story concept that became the powerful “Married Life” scene, showing Carl and Ellie’s love story.
  • Global Guardian Badge Game – Players try to locate countries, states and capitals around the globe in a multi-layered BD-Exclusive geography game enhanced by BD-Live.

There's also a 2xBD + 1xDVD set avaiable for a couple of quid less than the 4 disk - at least that's what I've ordered from Amazon. That'd better be what they send me!

@SimonI: I hate to carry the bad news, but I think the item you have ordered includes 1 Blu-ray disc and 1 DVD (Amazon has mistakenly listed it as including 2 Blu-ray discs and 1 DVD). Hmv.com has the listing that looks to be the correct one (I doubt Disney would release an additional item just to add the Digital Copy). Most probably the Superset (the more expensive BD alternative) has 2 Blu-ray discs and 1 DVD and 1 Digital Copy. I hope I am mistaken cause then I will be able to get all the features on the cheaper alternative (the Digital Copy would most probably not be available in Lebanon where I live, and the edition that was released here back in December 2009 had 1 BD and 1 DVD, the same cover and barcode as the UK cheaper BD release). You can always return your item if you are not satisfied, even if you have already unwrapped it (cause obviously the Amazon description will be wrong if it turns out to be 1 BD and 1 DVD). Hope you can post the actual content once you receive the item.

@davecarter: Can you please post which item you have ordered and what its contents are?

I asked Amazon and got a reply back that they didn't know! I might wait and see, or look out for early reviews - funny how davecarter's arrived several days ago yet Amazon are not even packing yet!

Is this the one you've ordered? I highly expect it to be a listing error yours to be the 1 disc blu and 1 disc DVD, we got Up in at work the other day and that cover was just a 2 disc, but please let us know what you receive. I really want the 4 disc (not that I'm interested in the DVD or digital copy, I just want the extras blu disc). I watched it the other night and was amazed at both the quality of the film and picture, a truly marvelous film. Shame the steelbook HMV had listed months back turned out to be a false listing.

That's the one - I ended up cancelling it as from looking at other etailer's listings it seemed likely to be a mistake. I'd rather pay the extra couple of quid for the "SuperSet" and forego the hassle or returning it!

As I learnt the hard way a few years ago amazon.co.uk don't even SHIP until the actual release date!
So when a DVD is released on a Monday that's the day they stick it in the post.
So you'll be lucky to get it 3 days after you could have walked into any shop and bought it :-(
So I stopped ordering new releases from amazon as both hmv & play ship so you get it on the release date.

Good old Disney UK why would you want a nice steelbook case when you can have a "Phone Charm" instead ;-)

Why would you want dts on Toy Story & Toy Story 2 etc etc

The bizarre thing is that Lovefilm (who are part of Amazon) send out their BDs early - I got Broken Embraces a fortnight before the release date!

Oh for the good old days when you could preorder from DVD Pacific and not only would it be cheaper, better and earlier than the UK release, they'd send it ten days early so you got it on or before release day!

I thought Lovefilm's retail side was operated via The Hut (same as Zavvi).

They are -- as are Sendit, WHSmith, Woolworths, Argos, Asda, Currys, Dixons, PC World... and I'm certain the list goes on.

Ah - I just assumed that because they were in bed with Amazon on the rental side the retail would be the same.

Just confirmed the 3 SKUs in the UK are:

Standard (1 x DVD)
Combi (1 x DVD & 1 x Blu-ray)
Superset (1 x DVD, 2 x Blu-ray, 1 Digital Copy)

So I'm just about to update the news piece with this but wanted to post it here quickly.
