Universal Pictures have sent through artwork and specs for the UK Blu-ray Disc release of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels which is expected to arrive on 25th January 2010. Written and directed by Guy Ritchie, this British crime caper sees streetwise charmer Eddie (Nick Moran) enter the biggest card game of his life with the savings of his three best friends: Tom (Jason Flemyng), Bacon (Jason Statham) and Soap (Dexter Fletcher). But he leaves the table owing his underworld boss Hatchet Harry half a million and has a week to come up with the money. Now Eddie and his friends must outsmart and outgun all types of lowlifes on their way to pay off Harry before time runs out.

The specs are the same as the US release, which means you get the original theatrical cut (108mins) with the following features:
  • 1080P Widescreen
  • English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio
  • French (European), Spanish (Castilian) and German 5.1 DTS Surround
  • English SDH, French (European), French (Canadian), Spanish (Castilian), Spanish (Latin), Dutch and German subtitles
  • One Smoking Camera
  • Lock, Stock and Two F**king Barrels

I like the fact that you can seemingly chart the success of the film's stars by the evolution of the Lock, Stock... DVD covers. If you check out the old R2 DVD cover that used a similar image (possibly the 1999 Director's Cut release) Statham's head was much smaller and Nick Moran appeared in the spot that has now been usurped by Dexter Fletcher. At this rate, if there's another release a couple of years down the line, the entire cover will probably be taken up with Statham's wonky-looking nose.

Nice to see Universal keeping their rip off reputation intact.

So no seamless branching directors cut and half the extra's from the DVD MIA.

Well Done Universal, after the UK BD release of The Thing your reputation took a bit of a knock but with this it's back on track again ;-)
