Paramount Home Entertainment have announced the US Blu-ray Disc release of It’s A Wonderful Life on 3rd November 2009. This classic directed by Frank Capra and starring James Stewart comes to Blu-ray with the following features:
  • B&W & Colourized versions
  • The Making of It's A Wonderful Life
  • Theatrical Trailer

Although not listed we suspect you’ll also find the ‘A Personal Remembrance’ featurette on the disc as well (this is of course TBC).

Also released the same day is a DVD Giftset that packages the existing 2-Disc CE along with a Limited Edition bell ornament and a commemorative booklet.

CHRIST! - Paramount... "COLOURIZED version"

"COLOURIZED VERSION"??????

2009 --- Blu-ray --- such disrespect for film history....

CHRIST.

COLOURIZED VERSION??????

Have you remixed it for 5.1 too? You can't colourize it and not remix it for 5.1.

How about 3D and colour and 5.1?

Yeah, not including the original black & white one, what's with that?! I mean, if that was there too, then the colourized one would just be an extra, a curio, but if they haven't even got the original on there, God!

No, wait, they have.

I take it the colorised version is the new one produced by legend films? I have heard good things about this version and the latest colorisation techniques. I am very much in favor of the colorisation of older films and I look forward to seeing this new version of a classic movie, but I appreciate that including the original b&w version is important for purists. Bring on the blu-ray!

I have to agree with badblokebob. While i'm as adverse to Colorization as Dibber the fact is it is only an extra, as it is on the Harryhausen BR. And if it looks as good as it does on those it's not that bad. (although only for a couple of minutes, obviously)

Glad to have the Black and White incarnation presented in high definition, and I think this will be Paramount's first dip in B&W hi-def territory. Here's hoping more will follow.

Yawn... boring extras as always. Very poor treatment of what is widely considered to be one of the best films of all time.

Has anyone heard (or got) the commentary from the old Criterion laserdisc?

Regards.

The same (minimum) set of extras are carried over from (DVD) edition to edition and now to BD. I'm aware of at least 3 DVD editions ( the earliest was before Paramount took over the rights) and if you count different cover arts - total of 4 (!) essentially the same editions. Paramount is doing pretty good job their Centennial Collection DVDs, why not do something similar to this film. (I assume the movie itself is not a Paramount one and doesnt qualify for the inclusion into this series)
