Apart from the evident brightness issues where I think the Criterion is undoubtedly better, it's interesting to note from this comparison that Criterion seem to have achieved a 1.66:1 aspect ratio by cropping information on the left and right of the frame and only opened up the top and bottom fractionally.

Yeah I don't think it's that unusual for there to be a slither of information lost on the sides of a 1.66:1 ratio compared to its 1.85:1 counterpart, but there isn't a tremendous amount of difference between the 2 releases when it comes to overall picture information. The Criterion has fractionally more image and most likey represents how the frame is supposed to look.

It's a shame that the Artifical Eye transfer is so damn dark, it's quite nice otherwise and would prove a satisfying cheaper alternative to the Criterion. It still does I guess, but you do lose a load of shadow detail.
